Ulcogant®

An ulcer in the area of the stomach or duodenum can cause very severe pain. More precisely, an ulcer is a defect in the skin, which can reach deep layers. In some cases, this skin lesion can be so deep that it breaks through the wall and causes gastric or intestinal contents to be emptied into the abdominal cavity (perforated ulcer ventriculi or duodeni).

The main reason for the development of an ulcer is an increased production of gastric acid. This is where the agent Ulcogant is used. Ulcogant contains the active ingredient sucralfate.

Sucralfate forms a protective layer over the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. This protective layer can be used prophylactically to avoid damage. In the case of already existing gastrointestinal damage, it can also prevent a worsening of the damage.

Ingredients

The active ingredient of the ulcogant, sucralfate, is a complex compound that develops its effect at acidic pH. Acidic pH is mainly present in the stomach. Here, the stomach acid creates a pH of 1.0-1.5.

Due to the acidity, sucralfate forms a jelly-like structure that lies protectively on the mucous membrane. In addition, suclafat triggers the formation of products such as prostaglandins, bicarbonate and mucins. All three resulting products have a pH-value increasing effect and thus counteract the acidic stomach environment.

Field of application

Ulcogant® can be used both for prophylaxis and therapy. Prophylactically, it can prevent or delay the occurrence of duodenal and gastric ulcers. The main areas of application of the Ulcogant® are ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.

Inflammations of the esophagus, caused by reflux of gastric acid, are also included in the area of application. It should be noted that Ulcogant® can be used in an early stage as well as in a late stage. However, before use, bacteria (such as Helicobacter pylori) or malignant ulcers should be excluded.

Dosage form

Ulcogant® is a prescription drug. Ulcogant® is available in tablet form and as a sachet or suspension. As a tablet, Ulcogant® contains 1 gram of sucralfate. The 250ml suspension contains 200 milligrams of sucralfate.
