Uterine Fibroids (Uterus Myomatosus, Leiomyomas): Diagnostic Tests

Obligatory medical device diagnostics.

  • Vaginal ultrasonography (ultrasound using an ultrasound probe inserted into the vagina) – for bleeding disorders or palpation findings (palpation findings).
  • Abdominal sonography (ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs) – in the case of very large fibroids (eg, the size of a child’s head) possibly in addition to vaginal sonography.

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination and the obligatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen (abdominal MRI)/pelvis (pelvic MRI) – indications (indications for use):
    • When a final assessment by sonography is not possible.
    • When adenomyosis or leiomyosarcoma is urgently suspected and therapy is relevant.
  • Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT)/pelvis (pelvic CT) – in case of inconclusive findings.
