Vaginal Spasm: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of vaginismus (vaginismus).

Family history

  • Are there frequent gynecologic conditions in your family?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long have you been experiencing vaginal cramps? As early as puberty?
  • Were there any traumatic sexual experiences in the past?
  • Where exactly does the pain occur:
    • Vaginal entrance?
    • Deep lower abdomen?
    • Deep in the vagina?
    • Dependent on movement?
  • When does the pain occur?
    • At the beginning?
    • At deep penetration?
    • After urination?
  • How long does the pain last?
  • How do you feel the pain in different situations: please indicate whether you have an increase, decrease or no change under
    • Stress?
    • Vacation?
    • Alcohol consumption?
  • Is sexual intercourse still possible?
  • Do you feel I their body tense or tension in the pelvic muscles when you notice that your partner wants to penetrate?
  • Do you experience any other discomfort during sexual intercourse?
  • If you perceive pain, how do you behave?
  • Are gynecological examinations possible?
  • Are you able to insert a tampon?
  • Do you currently have conflicts with your partner?
  • Or are there any other conflicts?
  • Do you have a strong desire to have children?
