Varicose Vein Hernia (Varicocele): Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) is an important component in the diagnosis of varicocele (varicocele hernia).

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent genitourinary tract disorders in your family?

Social history

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed any palpable enlargement in the scrotum* * ? If so, on which side* ?
    • Left side?
    • Right side?
    • Both sides?
  • Does the palpation increase when standing and Valsalva attempt?By a Valsalva attempt or Valsalva press attempt is understood the following: Forceful exhalation against the closed mouth and nasal opening with simultaneous use of the abdominal press.
  • Are you experiencing pain? If yes, when does the pain occur? Especially when standing?
  • Where is the pain localized?
  • Did the pain occur suddenly* * ?
  • How long has the pain existed?

* Primary varicocele/idiopathic varicocele is almost invariably on the left side. The right (but also left) varicocele may be symptomatic, that is, for example, may be late symptom of retroperitoneal tumor.

Vegetative history including nutritional history.
