Vomiting and diarrhoea during pregnancy

Nausea during pregnancy is a very common symptom. Especially in early pregnancy. This is called hyperemesis gravidarum.

The symptoms usually subside a few weeks later. If, however, vomiting or diarrhoea occurs during pregnancy, the first symptom – as with non-pregnant women – is a gastrointestinal infection (gastroenteritis). In most cases, this is not harmful to the unborn child per se.

The expectant mother should only take care to drink enough liquid. The loss of fluid caused by vomiting and diarrhoea must be compensated and in addition, the daily drinking amount of 1.5-2 liters must be achieved. In the case of severe dehydration, it may be necessary to have infusions administered by the family doctor in order to ensure sufficient fluid intake for mother and child.
