Vomiting (Emesis): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by vomiting (emesis):

Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Gastric ulcers – ulcers of the stomach.
  • Acid damage to tooth enamel

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

Causes (external) of morbidity and mortality (V01-Y98).

  • Aspiration – vomit enters the trachea and lungs and then often leads to pneumonia (pneumonia)
  • Desiccation – dehydration of the body with loss of vital blood salts such as sodium.
