Vomiting (Emesis): Medical History

The medical history represents an important component in the diagnosis of emesis (vomiting).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in your family that are common?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • When did you first vomit and when did you last vomit? How often did you vomit?
  • When did the vomiting occur?
    • Did it occur suddenly?
    • Predominantly in the morning?
    • In connection with food intake?
  • What does the vomit look like? Bilious, slimy, bloody* , coffee grounds-like* ?
  • Do they have to acid regurgitation?
  • Did you feel better after you vomited?
  • Did any other symptoms occur along with it?
    • Diarrhea?
    • Increased bowel sounds?
    • Abdomen with pressure pain* ?
    • Do you have a headache* ?
    • Have you noticed uncontrollable, rhythmic movements of the eye (eye tremor)* ?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • Have you lost body weight unintentionally?
  • Has your appetite changed?
  • Have you eaten food that may have spoiled?
  • Are you pregnant?
  • Have you noticed any changes in urination?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars, or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (diseases of the eyes / gastrointestinal tract / liver, gall bladder and bile ducts / pancreas / genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs); cardiovascular diseases; diseases of the nervous system / psyche; infections; metabolic diseases, tumor diseases).
  • Operations
  • Radiotherapy
  • Allergies
  • Pregnancies (currently pregnant?)
