Vortex number

In some people, the uppermost cruciate vertebra is not fused with the other vertebrae. It appears that these individuals have six lumbar vertebrae instead of five. This phenomenon is also called lumbalization. This often gives the spine greater mobility, but also a lower load limit. Most of the time, people do not even notice that they have six lumbar vertebrae; it is often discovered only by chance.

Possibility of movement

The movements that are possible in the sacrum are called nutation or counter-nutation. In this process, the promontorium, the protruding bone point between the 5th lumbar vertebra and the os sacrum, is shifted downward and forward. At the same time, the tip of the sacrum is shifted backwards and upwards.

Function

The Os sacrum has the task of providing support for the human upper body, otherwise it would simply collapse. Because the sacral vertebrae are fused together and fused with the pelvis, the sacrum provides the necessary stability.

Low back pain

Almost everyone suffers from low back pain, also known as lumbago, at some point in their lives. Mostly they are harmless and you don’t have to worry. Signs that indicate seriously increasing illnesses are: previous injuries such as an accident or fall, quickly worsening back pain, fever, paralysis, known osteoporosis, a known tumor disease, known rheumatic diseases or HIV infection.

If the above mentioned indications occur, you should consult a doctor. The doctor will thoroughly examine you physically to prevent a dangerous course of the back pain. If necessary, pain therapy, possibly physiotherapy or a massage will be postponed.

Too long bed rest is counterproductive. It is best to resume normal daily activities such as shopping, walking, etc. as soon as possible.

Until you are free of symptoms, you should only avoid sports or gymnastics. In most cases, the lower back pain goes away on its own after about one to two weeks. 90% can go back to work within six weeks.
