Water for Injection

Products

Water for injection is available in pharmacies. It is included in many drugs as an excipient, especially in liquid dosage forms for parenteral administration (injections, infusions).

Structure and properties

Water for injection is water (H2O, Mr = 18.02 g/mol) intended for use in the preparation of drugs for parenteral administration whose solvent is water (Water for Injection in bulk), or for dissolving or diluting substances or preparations for parenteral administration (Sterilized Water for Injection). It exists as a clear, colorless liquid and is prepared by means of distillation from drinking water or purified water. The pharmacopoeia distinguishes:

  • Water for injection in bulk.
  • Sterilized water for injection is water for injection in bulk in suitable containers that have been sealed and sterilized by heat.

The detailed requirements for both types can be found in the pharmacopoeia.

Indications for use

Water for injection is used as a solvent for active pharmaceutical ingredients and as a diluent.
