Water in the feet during menopause

The phase in a woman’s life in which hormones change and the woman passes from fertility to the so-called senium (lat. :age) is called menopause. It occurs around the age of 50 to 70 and is a physiological, normal process.

During this time, women increasingly report having water in their feet. This is caused by changes in the hormone balance. During the menopause there is a drop in progesterone in the blood, whereas the concentration of estrogen increases.

Similar to pregnancy, this increases the permeability of the blood vessels, so that water can get into the feet. Excessive weight can accelerate the process. No special diagnostic tools are used to diagnose water in the feet during menopause.

If the symptoms are severe, other causes should of course be excluded. The therapy is limited to treating the symptoms and reducing the amount of water in the feet, as the menopause is a natural process. One should pay attention to sufficient exercise and a good diet.

In order to reduce the symptoms, you can also use compressive bandages or stockings. Fast relief is achieved by putting your feet up high. A specific therapy, e.g. with medication, is only necessary in the case of long-lasting or severe complaints.
