Waterproof pads | Dangers in the baby/child’s bed

Waterproof pads

A waterproof carpet pad between the sheet and the mattress is no longer recommended from today’s point of view. Because waterproof also means that the carpet pad is usually not or only slightly permeable to air, which means that there is a risk of heat accumulation. Then even the best breathable mattress is useless. To avoid sudden infant death, it is therefore recommended not to use a waterproof carpet pad. Therefore, when buying a mattress it is recommended to make sure that it has a removable, washable cover.

Nest in a baby bed

Some studies have found that using a nest in the crib is a risk factor for suffocation in bed. This is because babies can come up against the nest with their face against it while sleeping. The mouth and nose are covered by the nest and thus block the airways.

The baby does not get enough oxygen and can suffocate. If the nest is not sufficiently attached to the bed, there is a risk that the baby will pull the nest up against its face. There is also a danger of suffocation. Therefore, no nest should be placed in the baby bed.

Are bars dangerous?

Almost all baby and children’s beds have bars. Nowadays these are usually built in such a way that there is no danger for babies and toddlers. When buying a baby bed, you should make sure that the distance between two adjacent bars is at least 45 mm and at most 65 mm.

This ensures that the child does not get stuck with its head and suffocate. Furthermore, especially when buying a used bed, you should make sure that the bars are well fixed and not damaged, so that the child cannot loosen the bars itself. In general you should make sure that the bed has no sharp edges or corners where the baby could be injured. Furthermore, it should be made of a material that is harmless to health, free of harmful substances and tested. This way parents can be sure that the baby can sleep in a safe environment.
