What are my dietary restrictions after gall bladder resection?

After the removal of the gallbladder and the recovery period of two to four weeks, there are no significant limitations. The bile required for fat digestion is further produced by the liver and directly released into the intestines. After the removal of the gallbladder, the only thing missing is the function to store and thicken the secretion.

Therefore, it is possible that very fatty food is less well tolerated than before the operation. Patients who have had their gall bladder removed occasionally complain of pain in the upper abdomen, a feeling of fullness or diarrhoea after high-fat meals. Especially in the first period after the operation, it is therefore advisable to follow a low-fat diet.

In addition, digestion can be made easier by increasing the amount of dietary fiber. Distributing the food intake over several smaller meals also helps the intestine to better utilize the components.
