What are possible consequences for children?

The consequences of a purely vegan diet can be very diverse and individually pronounced. However, they do not have to manifest themselves in every child that is fed vegan. As a consequence of a one-sided nutrition the maturity of the body-own immune system of the children can be strongly retarded on the one hand.

They show an increased susceptibility to infections and have a higher risk of developing an allergy.Due to a lack of energy and protein, many vegan children are often very tired and weak. They have no stamina, and deficits in concentration and comprehension can also become apparent. Since the physique and especially the growth of a child depends strongly on the intake of vital proteins, proteins and fats, which are present in animal products, vegan children often develop pronounced growth retardation.

Especially the growth in length can be strongly impaired. If vegan children do not receive an adequate supply of vitamin D, there is a high risk of developing rickets, a disorder of bone metabolism. Another serious consequence of a vegan diet can manifest itself due to a lack of vitamin B12 and folic acid.

These substances play a special role in the development of the child‘s nervous system. If insufficient amounts are consumed, children may suffer from serious defects in the development of the nervous system and develop far-reaching neurological deficits, accompanied by complex developmental delays or physical and mental disabilities. They may experience lethargy, seizures, structural disorders or mental retardation.

In addition, vitamin B12 and folic acid and especially iron are important for the haematopoietic system. A deficiency leads to haematopoietic disorders, which can lead to anaemia.
