What are the costs of a detox diet?

The cost of a detox diet depends largely on the origin of the drinks. If you buy a complete package, the prices are on average between 40 – 200€ for 3 to 5 days. Examples are “Cleanse Starter” by frankjuice, a 3-day cure for 99€, “Super Cleanse 3” by Dean&David, a 5-day cure for 200€ and the “Juice and Soup cure” by detox Delight for about 100€ for three days.

Don’t forget that there is no charge for all other meals for this period. If you prepare the smoothies and juices yourself, you can have a strong influence on the costs. For example, you can buy cheap frozen berries or fresh exotic fruits. Overall, the detox diet is a more expensive form of nutrition.

Side effect of the detox diet

The first, obvious side effect of the detox diet is hunger. In the first few days, attacks of ravenous appetite are therefore very frequent. In the course of the diet the body gets used to the low food intake and the cravings decrease.

Tricks against ravenous appetite are distraction, walks, reading, telephoning, or “pushing the hunger away”. There is an acupressure pressure point in the depression between nose and upper lip, which can be pressed for 15 seconds. Especially in the first days of the detox diet, slight headaches, dizziness and weakness may also occur.

This changes after a few days, when the body adjusts to the new energy supply and adapts the metabolism. Occasionally, from the third day of the diet onwards, a blocked tongue and bad breath may occur. Frequent tooth brushing and gargling with peppermint tea can help against this.

People with a sensitive stomach can get flatulence or diarrhoea due to the high fibre content of the juices. Some people react to the fasting cure with skin impurities or rings under the eyes. Another side effect is a decrease in muscle mass.

Criticism of a detox diet

The detox diet is difficult to implement in everyday working life or studies, as there is a large energy deficit, especially in the first few days. In addition, there is a great deal of hunger and side effects such as poor performance, which are not well compatible with work, can occur. For most people, the detox diet leads to side effects such as headaches, dizziness and weakness.

Many people also suffer from severe attacks of ravenous hunger and the resulting bad mood. Occasionally, digestive problems can occur. Deficiency symptoms can occur due to the one-sided food intake, which can be dangerous.

Some scientists say that the body stores more fat after a fasting cure than before, which most likely causes the yo-yo effect. In addition, muscle mass is lost, especially in the first week, which is something that one would actually like to avoid with a healthy lifestyle. Critics sometimes claim that detoxification is not necessary because the human body has an efficient detoxification system (liver, kidneys, skin). According to scientists, commercial products that say “Detox” on them are often ineffective, as most detox teas or smoothies only have a laxative effect.
