What are the long-term effects?

The long-term consequences cannot yet be fully assessed. Permanent use of the drug could possibly trigger psychoses, mental disorders and tics. The risk of these long-term effects is higher in persons with a corresponding disposition.

Weight loss or weight gain may occur. Often the appetite seems to be very small during the day and often very pronounced in the evening hours. Depending on eating habits and metabolism, this could lead to permanent weight gain or loss.

Growth disorders during long-term use are controversial. There is also speculation that long-term use could have a damaging effect on the thinking functions. Furthermore, there is controversial discussion whether Ritalin® leads to dependency. Moreover, it is difficult to assess whether long-term use will lead to permanent personality changes.
