What are the risks of surgery?

Xanthelasma surgery is a low-risk procedure. A scar may remain after surgery. If the xanthelasma is removed with a laser, there is a risk of subsequent bruising or pigment changes. With all methods there is also the risk that the xanthelasma may reappear.

Who operates on Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma can be operated on by doctors of various specialties. These include ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons and also dermatologists (dermatologists). It is advisable to find out beforehand from which doctor which methods are offered. Your treating physician will recommend the most suitable method for you and inform you about the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods.

What does the operation cost?

There is no general answer to the question of how much an operation costs. The cost depends on the method chosen, as well as the size and number of xanthelasma. As a rule, one can expect costs of 250 Euro upwards.

It is advisable to obtain a cost estimate from the treating doctor. The removal of xanthelasma is usually a purely cosmetic procedure. For this reason, a statutory health insurance usually pays neither for an operation nor for removal by another method (e.g. laser). With private insurances you should ask if and which services are covered. If there is an underlying disease, such as a lipometabolic disorder, the treatment is covered by the health insurance companies.

How long does the operation take?

It is not possible to say in general how long an operation to remove xanthelasma takes, as the duration depends largely on the chosen treatment method. One should include the time for preparation and follow-up and the procedure itself. As a rule, one can expect a treatment period of 15 to 30 minutes.
