What can be done about the pain?

The easiest way to counteract pain in varicose veins is to elevate the affected leg. This helps the blood to be transported away by gravity and the pressure in the leg should improve. Another possibility is to move the foot.

This activates the muscles of the lower leg and pumps the blood along the veins back to the heart. So-called compression stockings often also help. These are usually prescribed by a doctor or can be purchased over the counter.

Compression or thrombosis stockings are very tight stockings which exert compression on the leg and thus promote blood flow. However, if stronger pain should occur in addition to the unpleasant, typical complaints, independent therapy should be avoided and a doctor should be consulted, as it could be a thrombosis or inflammation. There are numerous home remedies which have the property of alleviating typical varicose vein complaints.

Only a few of these are mentioned below. The best known treatment for varicose veins is to apply cold compresses to the legs. For this purpose they should first be put on high to achieve an optimal result.

Now kitchen towels, for example, can be soaked in cold water and wrapped around the calves. Other possibilities are wraps with essential oils such as juniper or lavender. Quark wraps are also a good alternative.

Quark cools the affected area and relieves swelling and inflammation. Herbal remedies such as horse chestnut, butcher’s broom or magic shrub leaves can also be helpful. They reduce typical symptoms of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency and can be taken in the form of teas, for example.
