What can I do to speed up the healing process in the cast?

Good immobilization is very important in scaphoid fractures. For this reason, care should also be taken to protect the affected hand when a plaster cast is applied. Even if the pain in the wrist subsides, one should not carry heavy loads with the plastered hand.

It is also important not to use the thumb of the affected side if possible. Especially immediately after the scaphoid fracture and at the beginning of the therapy, there can still be severe swelling in the area of the wrist. It is therefore advisable to cool and raise the plastered hand sufficiently.

In this way the blood flows better out of the injured area and there is less swelling under the cast. During the healing phase you should also avoid heavy physical activity and sports. Even though the injured hand may not be used.

If the circulation is stimulated particularly strongly, this can cause swelling and pain in the affected wrist. In addition, it is not possible to wash under the cast, which is why it is also a question of hygiene to avoid unnecessarily heavy sweating. To speed up the healing process, it is advisable to perform the exercises from the physiotherapy conscientiously. These improve the healing of the scaphoid, reduce the swelling and pain and also support the reconstruction of muscles in the wrist in the later healing process.
