What can you eat in case of diarrhoea?

In case of a diarrhea illness, attention should be paid to the correct nutrition. In order not to irritate the already sensitive intestine even more, one should fall back on a light diet. Since there is usually a loss of appetite in the cream of a gastrointestinal infection anyway, this is usually already voluntarily adhered to.

By “light food” one understands thereby above all the renouncement of fatty and sharp food. Also too sweet food, as well as wholemeal and dairy products should be avoided. For example, eating rusks, dry bread or noodles, as well as grated apples or salt sticks is a good idea.

Salt sticks, for example, have the beneficial effect of compensating for the loss of salt. While ingredients of the apple have a positive effect on the intestinal mucosa. A balance of the mineral/salt balance is also achieved by eating bananas, because they have a high potassium content.

Because a change in the potassium balance can be harmful. Since diarrhoea is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, care should be taken not to eat too much food at once, which overburdens the stomach. The light diet should therefore always be eaten in portions and not in large quantities at once.

The same applies to drinking. With extreme complaints it is therefore recommended to take its tea or water by the spoonful. This is often done with children.

Still water, tea or vegetable broth is recommended. Cola is also suitable because of its high sugar content. Non-fat soups can also be consumed.

If it is a case of massive diarrhoea with a strong loss of fluid and salt, special glucose-electrolyte solutions can be purchased in the pharmacy, which are supposed to balance the mineral balance again. After acute diarrhoea, the intestinal mucosa needs some time to regenerate. Usually this takes place of its own accord within the scope of normal physical repair processes. In some cases, yeast fungi in capsule form can be taken as a support (Perenterol, consisting of Saccharomyces). With chronic diarrhea, however, the possibilities of regeneration depend on the underlying disease.
