What further measures are there? | Physiotherapy for a sprained ankle

What further measures are there?

In the therapy of a sprained ankle, as mentioned above, there are various measures that can be taken to support wound healing. In addition to thermal applications such as cold to counteract swelling and pain or heat to relax muscle tension and tissue, ultrasound and electrotherapy are also suitable to promote blood circulation, reduce pain and optimize the healing process.

Should I tap the foot?

Especially at foot and ankle joints, tapestries are suitable as external support applications. On the one hand, there are myofascial or kinesio-tapes, which, depending on how they are applied, can take up muscle and tissue tension and increase blood circulation, or have a muscle-activating and stabilizing effect. These tapes are well suited for everyday use and last up to a week. On the other hand, there are leukotapes, which are applied around the foot and ankle like a tight bandage. They are particularly suitable for returning to sports and last only for a few hours.

Summary

A sprained ankle is usually caused by a twisted ankle of the foot. Depending on the severity of the trauma, in addition to tears in the tissues that cause pain and swelling, ligaments can tear or even break the bones that form the joint. The prognosis with conservative therapy is usually good.

Surgery is only performed if the entire ligamentous apparatus is torn or bones with joint involvement are affected. During therapy, stability in particular is trained in order to prevent a recurrence of the injury.
