What influence does the three-month injection have on the period?

Three-month injections lead to irregular periods, especially at the beginning of use, in many women and in some cases to slight bleeding or spotting. After a few months, the period usually weakens and can even stop altogether. However, how the hormones affect the period and the time it takes for changes to occur is different for every woman and cannot be generalized. In case of doubt or heavy bleeding, the advice of your gynaecologist should be sought.

Bleeding under the three-month syringe

Under the three-month injection, there is often intermittent and spotting bleeding because the hormone preparation interferes with the cycle and influences the growth and rejection of the uterine lining. In the case of very heavy bleeding or if it lasts for several days, the gynaecologist should be consulted. The period can weaken after some time and even stop altogether, so that some women have no bleeding at all.

When does the three-month injection start working?

The three-month injection is administered between the first and fifth day of the cycle and takes effect immediately. The first day of the cycle is the day when menstruation begins. This means that pregnancy will no longer occur once the injection has been administered correctly and at the correct time. The effect is very reliable compared to other contraceptives. However, one hundred percent protection against pregnancy can never be guaranteed.

What do you have to consider when discontinuing the three-month injection?

If the three-month syringe is discontinued, this means that no further syringe will be administered. However, the hormones injected last must be broken down slowly by the body and this process cannot be accelerated. If side effects are the reason for discontinuation, they can therefore only be treated symptomatically until the hormone level drops.

This means, for example, that pain must be treated with painkillers. On the other hand, there can also be various side effects due to discontinuation and the falling hormone level. If the three-month injection is discontinued because a pregnancy is desired, it must be noted that it can take up to two years before the cycle returns to normal.Accordingly, it can take a long time until the desire for children is fulfilled. However, this does not apply to all women, so that after discontinuing the contraceptive method there is no protection against pregnancy after three months since the last injection. If you do not want to have a child, you must therefore use another method of contraception – for example, condoms.
