What is a transtibial prosthesis?

A transtibial prosthesis is a medical aid that takes over the functions of the now missing body part after transtibial amputation. Most modern prostheses are based on the natural shape of a lower leg and foot, so that they are not directly noticeable when wearing long trousers. In addition to this visual effect, transtibial prostheses are primarily intended to enable the amputee to walk.

It is essential that the prosthesis is professionally adapted to the individual patient. In addition, the patient must learn how to handle and walk with the lower leg prosthesis during rehabilitation treatment. A well-healed and well cared for residual limb is a prerequisite for the fitting of such an aid. Especially in the case of a poorly healing wound, the treatment is therefore often difficult.
