What is Lumbago?

Behind this euphonious name lies an annoying pain that can catch us completely off guard. This pain is the universally known lumbago. Derived from Latin, lumbago means approximately lumbar paralysis (from Latin lumbago = lumbar paralysis).

Disease pattern lumbago

Sudden stabbing pain in the lumbar region is typical of lumbago. The complaints can occasionally also radiate, but then rather in the direction of the chest. Due to excessive pain, those affected instinctively adopt a protective posture in which they feel the least pain, which leads to the typical stiffness of posture.

Wear and tear of the spine and intervertebral disc

Lumbago is usually triggered by a certain movement (for example, bending over, lifting a heavy load, straightening up from a stooped posture). But cold, wet or drafts can also precede it. The cause is usually wear and tear of the spine and the intervertebral disc.

But also tension of the back muscles can lead to the typical pain in the area of the lumbar spine. These are usually caused by lack of exercise, excess weight, too much sitting or even incorrect stress and overload due to heavy physical work or one-sided rigid motion sequences.

And the soul also plays a role, because psychological strain and stress can cause muscle tension in the back and thus prepare the ground for lumbago.
