What is occlusion training?

Occlusion training is not a term used in dentistry, it rather describes an exercise from training science. It is a new type of strength and endurance training and aims to increase muscle size and endurance. Occlusion here means: the occlusion of a vessel or a body passage, which leads to its setting.

The congestion of the blood triggers an increase in metabolic products and an accumulation of growth hormones at this point. As a result, the musculature can be built up more quickly there. Furthermore, the muscle-degrading protein myostatin was found to be reduced when occlusion training was applied.

A positive aspect is that this type of training can be performed with very low loads and is therefore ideal for the rehabilitation phase after operations. Exclusion criteria for the application are high blood pressure, pregnancy, heart defects as well as an increased risk of thrombosis, since this can lead to a worsening of the disease. Occlusion is the position of the teeth of the upper jaw in relation to the teeth of the lower jaw.

Deviations from the physiological occlusion can lead to considerable discomfort for the teeth, temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles. Normal conditions can be restored by dental and orthodontic measures.
