What is the cause? | Urachus fistula

What is the cause?

The cause of an Urachus fistula is based on the lack of closure of the “Urachus”, i.e. the passage between the bladder and the navel. This means that there is still a connection between the two parts of the body – which is then called a fistula.

Urachus fistula in the baby

In babies, the urinary fistula is caused by an incomplete or absent closure of the urinary tract connecting the navel to the bladder. As a rule, the connection between the navel and the bladder is severed during the foetal period of the child’s development. Occasionally, this closure does not occur and a fistula develops.Affected babies then often attract attention through a fluid leakage from the navel, which is actually a small amount of urine.

Urachus fistula in adults

Fistulas can also occur in adults. However, these are generally much less common than in babies. The cause of a Urachus fistula in adults is the same as in babies. Here, too, there is a fault in the closure or lack of closure of the “Urachus”. A connection between the navel and the bladder remains.

This is how the operation of a urachus fistula is performed

A Urachus fistula can be well treated surgically. As a rule, an incision is made at the navel and an exposure with subsequent separation of the persistent duct of the urrachus. Occasionally, surgery must be extended to a laparoscopic procedure, i.e. laparoscopy. For this purpose, several small incisions are made in the abdomen and the urinary tract can be removed with the help of a camera that provides insight into the abdominal cavity.

Duration & prognosis

After surgical treatment of the Urachus fistula, the affected persons are basically considered “cured”. The time immediately after the operation is usually associated with a rest period of several weeks so that the wound can heal properly. As with any surgical procedure, complications can also occur with the Urachus fistula, including infections, bleeding, etc., which can hinder the healing process.

However, these are general surgical risks that can occur with any operation. Once the surgical wound has healed, the affected patients usually do not have to expect any restrictions. The prognosis of the urachus fistula can therefore generally be regarded as very good.
