What is the protein content of the egg?

Introduction

Eggs contain a lot of protein. This fact is known to most people. But what does a lot of protein mean in concrete figures?

100g of egg contains about 13g of protein. The rest consists mainly of fat and water. For a medium-sized M-class egg, the protein content is therefore approx.

6 to 8 grams. The body can utilize this animal protein particularly well. It uses it for building up tissue, especially for the muscles.

What is the protein content of egg yolk?

Eggs are very protein-rich foods. In the technical language, proteins are called proteins. What will surprise most people, however, is the fact that it is mainly the yolk that contains the protein.

The egg yolk is therefore much richer in protein than the egg white. It contains 1.5 times as much protein. Furthermore, the egg yolk consists of fat and various minerals and vitamins.

The fat part is mainly formed by cholesterol. Iron and phosphorus are the minerals it contains. The egg yolk mainly provides vitamins A and B1.

What is the protein content of egg white?

At first sight it seems a bit strange that the yolk should contain more protein than the egg white. But this is actually the case. In the egg white the protein content is only two thirds of that of the yolk.

It consists mainly of albumin and water. In contrast to egg yolk, it contains hardly any fat, and thus virtually no cholesterol. Therefore pure egg white is also very low in calories compared to yolk. Minerals and vitamins are also contained in much smaller quantities.

Eggs of different sizes

The size of the eggs must be indicated on the pack. Eggs of size M are medium in size and usually weigh between 53g and 63g. In diameter they are between 41 and 43,5mm thick.

On average, these eggs contain about 6 to 8 grams of protein. In addition, they contain about 6 grams of fat and about half a gram of carbohydrates. The rest is water.

In total, the egg of size M contains about 90 calories. Also interesting: food pyramid eggs of size S are rather small. They therefore need considerably less time to cook and are ready more quickly.

Size S eggs are eggs that weigh less than 53g. Their diameter is smaller than 41mm. They contain fewer total calories; only about 77 kcal.

The protein content is about 5-6 grams. The rest is composed of fat, a small amount of carbohydrates and mainly water. Eggs of size L are larger.

They take longer to finish. With approx. 63 to 73g they are smaller than eggs of size XL, which are considered very large.

Eggs of size L have a diameter between 43,5 and 45,5mm. They contain between 9 and 10 grams of protein. The fat content is about 8 grams.

As with all eggs, the carbohydrate content is very low. The main component is water. The energy value of an egg of size L is about 110 kcal.
