What questions are you asked? | The first visit to the gynaecologist

What questions are you asked?

Before the actual examination, the gynaecologist will have a conversation with the patient in which the first essential questions are clarified. If desired, especially in the case of young patients or those who are particularly shy before the visit to the gynaecologist, it is also possible to have just one consultation and the examination at a different time. At the beginning of the consultation, the reason for the visit is asked.

This is followed by the question of whether the patient is taking medication on a permanent basis and, if so, which. It is also important for the doctor to know whether the patient suffers from any illnesses or whether any are known to her close family. Here the special focus is on gynaecological diseases, especially cancer diseases within the family.

It can be helpful to ask relatives before the visit to the gynaecologist whether illnesses are known in the family in order to be able to give the doctor information. It is also interesting for the gynaecologist to know whether the patient has already undergone surgery during her life. Another part of the interview is usually the period.

Here it is important to know at what age it first occurred and when the last menstruation was. In addition, there are questions about how regular it is, how heavy the bleeding is, any pain and how long the period lasts. The gynaecologist will also ask whether sexual intercourse has already taken place or whether the patient is still a virgin.

This question is important in order to make the right choice of instruments during the examination. If sexual intercourse has already taken place, the question usually follows as to whether it can take place without any problems or whether there are any complaints. The gynaecologist may also ask whether and how contraception is used. The doctor will also ask whether the patient has received any vaccinations and if so, which ones. It is important that you have the opportunity to ask your own questions and address problems at any time without hesitation.

Which questions can/should you ask?

Right at the beginning it should be emphasized that every question about gynecological complaints, worries, sexuality or the functioning of the female body has its justification and may always be asked. There are no wrong questions and you can talk to your gynaecologist about the desired topics without shame. It can be helpful to write down your questions in writing before your visit to the gynaecologist so that you can ask them specifically during the consultation.

The gynaecologist is the right person to contact if you want to use contraception. Here the patient can ask questions about the best individual method, the mode of action, risks and side effects. If pregnancy is planned, a consultation can also take place, questions can be asked and the necessary examinations can be carried out.

Many women have their monthly cycle explained and questions answered, especially during their first visit to the gynaecologist. At this point, the patient can ask any concerns or questions about lack of regularity or particularly severe pain. It is also possible to ask questions about the examination and the instruments used.
