What remuneration do you receive if you care for a relative?

Persons in need of care who are cared for by relatives do not receive a care allowance for this. They are also not entitled to a care payment in kind by a care service. The MDK classifies patients with care level 1 in such a way that they can still manage their lives relatively well on their own and therefore require practically no care from relatives or professional caregivers. As a relative, you therefore receive no remuneration if you care for a person in need of care with care level 1.

How do I make the application?

The application for the care levels is addressed to the care insurance. The application is informal. This means that the application can basically be made by telephone, e-mail or in writing.

To avoid discrepancies, it is advisable to submit the application in writing and to keep a copy of the application. Services will not be provided retroactively. Benefits can be paid at the earliest from the month in which the application is submitted.

The application at the end of the month is sufficient to receive the benefit for the entire month, provided that the need for care has existed since the beginning of the month. The application is submitted to the nursing care insurance fund, which is always organized with the health insurance company with which you are insured. The applicant is the person who makes the application or in whose name the application must be made.

The applicant is therefore always the person in need of care, not the carer. This means that the benefits are applied for by and for the person in need of care. If you want to make the application in writing, a short written letter is sufficient: Name of the person in need of care, address of the person in need of care “I hereby apply for benefits of the nursing insurance and ask for a short-term assessment” Sincerely yours, signature
