What should be considered when weaning?

Patients treated with SNRI should not discontinue or change the dose without consulting their doctor. SNRI should never be stopped suddenly. This can lead to life-threatening side effects.

These include symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, drowsiness or confusion, diarrhea, nausea, nervousness, agitation, or discomfort. Seizures are also possible if the medication is suddenly stopped. These side effects are also known as withdrawal syndrome or withdrawal syndrome when stopping psychotropic drugs.

In consultation with your doctor the dose of the medication should be gradually reduced. In case of strong side effects a doctor must be consulted. The withdrawal syndrome or withdrawal syndrome describes the occurrence of various side effects after stopping or reducing the dose of antidepressants.

Withdrawal syndrome also occurs when SNRIs are discontinued. The risk is very high when the active substance venlafaxine is discontinued. The clinical picture of weaning syndrome is varied.

In addition to perceptual disorders such as paresthesia, ringing in the ears or double vision, balance disorders and sleep disturbances can also occur. Psychological symptoms such as increased irritability, anxiety or depressive moods are also possible. Physical symptoms can also occur, including headaches, trembling, sweating or loss of appetite.

These symptoms appear shortly after stopping or reducing the dose and subside rapidly after taking the medication again. To prevent withdrawal syndrome, SNRIs should never be discontinued on their own without consulting a physician. In addition, antidepressants should never be discontinued abruptly; the withdrawal should last at least two, preferably four weeks.
