What should you do if a prosthesis breaks?

Since the prosthesis base is made of plastic, it is prone to breakage and may be damaged or even break through if dropped on the ground. This danger exists especially if the palatal plate is filigree and thin. To reinforce the prosthesis, metal meshes can be incorporated into the plastic base of total dentures.

In case of a fracture, whether it is a total denture, implant-supported denture or telescopic denture, it must definitely be repaired by a technician. It is often not enough to hand over the parts of the damaged denture to the dentist, in many cases an over impression has to be taken to ensure the correct composition of the individual parts. It is important to visit the dentist as soon as possible, because with telescopic dentures the teeth can migrate as soon as the denture is not worn for a longer period of time.

If a prosthesis is broken, no matter what type of prosthesis, it is not possible to repair it on your own. The use of adhesives is strongly discouraged, since the individual parts often cannot be joined together without a gap and the prosthesis will not fit afterwards. Furthermore, the adhesive used is often poisonous and not suitable for the oral cavity, which is why going to the dentist is unavoidable.
