What to do?

First of all, any manipulation on or in the ear should be avoided. No objects should be inserted into the ear canal. Heat applications can provide a first remedy for mild ear pain.

A cherry stone or gel cushion can be warmed up and placed on the ear. The temperature should not be too high, otherwise the skin will be damaged or the clinical picture will deteriorate. If heat applications and other household remedies do not help, painkillers can be used.

A suitable medication here is ibuprofen from the group of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). If there is also a fever, paracetamol can also reduce the fever in addition to its good pain-relieving properties. Decongestant nasal drops can support the healing process and alleviate the symptoms.

In most cases it is not necessary to take antibiotics. These are administered in the case of bacterial infections when the disease has progressed far. However, treatment without antibiotics is usually attempted, as many ear diseases have a high spontaneous healing rate. Antibiotics can also be administered as an ointment for inflammation of the external auditory canal.

Home remedy for earache

Apart from a medical treatment of the ear disease underlying the ear pain, homeopathic remedies as well as the proven household remedies are important. However, it is important to note that not all home remedy applications are effective for all causes: correct and effective treatment of ear pain is, however, of utmost importance, since the wrong treatment can have serious consequences (e.g. meningitis caused by an inflammation, loss of hearing, etc.). One of the best known household remedies for earache is the so-called onion sacs.In this process, finely diced, briefly heated onions are wrapped in a clean cloth and placed on the ear up to three times a day for about an hour (and possibly fixed). The essential oils of the onion that unfold during this process have an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect on the one hand and an expectorant and metabolism stimulating effect on the other. The warmth also has a pain-relieving effect.
