What to do if the gums bleed?

Bleeding while brushing teeth is a sign of inflammation of the gums. The most important thing is to fight the inflammation and strengthen the gums again. As the inflammation subsides, bleeding also disappears. Visiting the dentist is very important. Usually a solution for local application in the oral cavity and/or, depending on the severity of the inflammation, an antibiotic is prescribed.

Baby’s white gums – is that dangerous?

White gums in babies can have various causes. It is often a sign of a tooth that is about to erupt. It is also more tense than the surrounding gums.

In this case it is of course not dangerous. Due to the soon erupting tooth underneath, the tissue is displaced at the site and therefore less blood supply is available. This results in the white coloration.

One should check whether the white spots on the gums can be wiped away. If they can be wiped away, they do not indicate that a tooth has broken through, but are a sign of a fungal infection. In this case a dentist should be consulted as soon as possible to fight the fungus.

Swollen gums – what to do?

If the baby’s gums are swollen while teething, this can be very uncomfortable for the baby. As a first measure the affected area can be cooled. Heat should be avoided at all costs.

To reduce the swelling, the affected area can be cooled with cold fruit pieces or cool teething rings. A cold cloth can also be applied to the cheek from the outside to counteract the swelling. There are also special ointments that can be applied to the gums. However, many of these ointments contain a local anaesthetic, so they are often not recommended. A clarification with the treating pediatrician can help.

Every child experiences teething differently. Some babies have severe pain when their teeth break through their gums. Others have only minor discomfort.

Teething is often accompanied by fever and diarrhoea, as babies are particularly sensitive to infections during this time. In many cases, the gums are very irritated. It is displaced by the erupting new tooth.

The gums are often swollen and reddened when the first teeth break through. Gum inflammation can also occur. Ointments that can be applied to the gums to relieve the swelling and discomfort, or homeopathic remedies can help care for the gums.
