What to do if you get plaque despite regular brushing?

If plaque often develops despite regular tooth brushing, this can be due to several factors. On the one hand, it may be due to the fact that dental care at home is not carried out properly and plaque may still remain after brushing. However, staining tablets help to make the remaining plaque visible so that it is easier to remove.

On the other hand, the individual composition of saliva is also decisive for the formation of tartar. Saliva with a high mineral content is also more likely to settle even with good oral hygiene. In such cases, the only thing that helps is regular checking and removal by the dentist.

What happens if plaque is not removed?

If plaque is not removed, it is transformed into tartar by the accumulation of calcium. Due to its rough surface, it provides an excellent starting point for new plaque. However, tartar can no longer be removed with a toothbrush, but must be removed by the dentist using ultrasound. Tartar formation without plaque is not possible. Tartar is not only responsible as a starting point for new plaque, but due to its sharp edges it also exerts a constant irritation on the gums, which become inflamed and thus form an entry point for bacteria.

Plaque after taking antibiotics

Just like some foods, antibiotics can discolor teeth. In most cases, these tooth clouding are reversible, i.e. removable. Even with a good brushing technique these deposits cannot always be prevented.

Amoxicillin, which is frequently used in dentistry, causes a grey or brown discoloration. Through regular dental care, professional tooth cleaning and polishing the teeth shine again in no time. This is not the case with tetracyclines, however: these antibiotics form a certain substance in the presence of calcium, which can penetrate the teeth in the growth phase (childhood) and then discolour them brownish. Therefore, this active ingredient is absolutely contraindicated in the development phase as well as in pregnancy and must not be used any more.
