What to do in case of skin rash?

Introduction

The integrity of the skin is a very sensitive issue for many people. Skin rash is not only physically, but also psychologically a great burden for most people. Therefore, the question of what to do in case of a rash often arises.

While some rashes do not require any special treatment, other rashes need treatment. While some rashes are acute, for example in the context of an allergy, other rashes are the expression of a chronic disease, such as neurodermatitis. There are some measures that people with a rash can take themselves to relieve their symptoms. One example is good basic skin care for atopic dermatitis or avoiding substances that cause an allergic rash. However, not every measure is appropriate and useful for every type of rash and therefore one should always seek medical clarification of the cause of a rash before taking any action.

Home remedy for a rash

There are various recommendations which home remedies help with a skin rash. However, it must be noted that not every household remedy is suitable for every rash and therefore no general recommendations exist. Household remedies should only be used if it is certain that they will not worsen the condition of the skin.

Itchy skin rashes, such as those caused by an allergy or sunburn, can be treated with cold curd wraps in the acute situation. By cooling the skin, the itching and swelling are relieved. One should refrain from using other household remedies such as essential oils, honey or chamomile tea washes if the cause of the rash is not clear, because in the worst case, the condition may worsen.

What to do against itching?

Itching is a very unpleasant symptom that accompanies many rashes. The causes can be quite different. Frequently, allergies, parasitic infections (such as scabies) or sunburns cause itchy skin rashes.

A very effective and simple measure against itchy skin rashes are cold quark or yoghurt compresses. Cool towels can also relieve the itching. Antihistamines or light cortisone ointments can be prescribed by the doctor to combat itching.

Depending on the underlying cause, there are other medications such as antimycotics, antibiotics or antivirals (drugs against viruses) for itchy skin rashes. A very common cause of an itchy rash is the so-called scabies. This parasitic disease is treated with the active ingredient permethrin. As a person affected, hygiene measures are of prime importance. Any contaminated laundry, bed linen and even used towels are best washed in the boil wash.
