When can I do sports again after a coccyx fracture?

When a patient is allowed to do sports again after a coccyx fracture depends very much on how young the patient is and how good the healing process of the coccyx is. In general, the patient should only start doing sports again when he or she is free of pain. It is important here that the patient begins with coccyx-friendly sports, such as swimming.

Riding a bicycle or horseback riding is an enormous strain on the coccyx and should only be done again when the patient is absolutely pain-free. However, when a patient can take up sports again varies greatly and must be decided individually. Some patients are completely pain-free after 3 months and can then resume sports.

Other patients, on the other hand, still have pain in their coccyx after one year and can therefore only do sports such as aqua gymnastics. Since the course of the coccyx fracture varies greatly from one individual to another, there is no general indication as to when sport is possible again after the coccyx fracture. The patient should therefore pay particular attention to himself.

It is important to note that a coccyx fracture must heal completely so that there is no consequential damage such as chronic pain. Therefore, it is strongly discouraged to return to sports activities too early if the fracture has not yet completely healed.
