When can you drink alcohol again? | Operation on the wisdom tooth

When can you drink alcohol again?

In the first days after the operation, alcohol should be completely avoided. Many alcoholic beverages contain substances that irritate the wound and thus lead to inflammation. Since the body is weakened by the surgical procedure, the consumption of alcohol is an additional burden.

When can I drink coffee again?

Coffee should not be drunk in the first days after the operation, as the caffeine it contains causes the blood pressure to rise. With its increase, the risk of postoperative bleeding increases. After approx. 5 – 7 days the wound has healed sufficiently for the patient to start drinking coffee again.

What are the costs of wisdom tooth surgery?

The surgical costs are covered by the statutory as well as private health insurance companies if the operation is performed under local anesthesia. The exact amount depends on the complexity of the operation and the number of teeth to be removed. The following additional services are not covered by statutory health insurance and must be invoiced as private services: Preparation of a three-dimensional X-ray image, wisdom tooth surgery under general anesthesia, special surgical techniques as well as other anesthetic procedures (e.g. nitrous oxide or sedation). The costs for general anesthesia depend on the respective effort and will be invoiced directly by the anesthesiologist. As a rule, these costs are around 150 – 400 euros. In order to clarify the exact cost coverage, one should submit a cost estimate to the respective health insurance company before the operation.

Duration of sick leave

The duration of the sick leave depends on the difficulty and length of the operation. If the wisdom teeth can be extracted without complications (without cutting the gums), the patient can theoretically go back to work the next day. Realistically, however, in this case one should allow oneself three days of rest so that the wound can heal without complications.

In the case of a difficult operation where the gums have to be opened, a sick leave of seven to ten days is necessary. If complications occur during this time, the duration can be extended.
