When does your chest pain start?

In some cases, patients suffer from chest pain on the right side, which is mainly manifested by inhalation (pain when breathing in). The fact that chest pain on the right side is dependent on breathing is already an indication of a problem in the lungs or the chest wall. As the intercostal muscles are involved in inhalation, ribs and muscles can be the cause of the pain.

This may be due to a contusion or fracture, or nerve entrapment. In this case, rest, pain therapy and possibly a settling are indicated. If this is not the case, the cause of chest pain on the right side of the inhalation may be in the lungs or lung membrane.

Here, pneumonia can lead to chest pain on the right side when inhaled, which can also pass to the lung skin. Then one feels pain especially when breathing in. The reliable diagnosis is made with an X-ray, the therapy consists of the administration of antibiotics.

Less serious viral respiratory tract infections such as influenza can also cause such complaints, although only protection and symptom control can help here. In rare cases, a malignant tumour or a pulmonary embolism can be found behind chest pain on the right side when inhaled. When coughing, increased pressure is typically built up in the chest.

This pressure is held and stabilized by the bony thorax (ribs and sternum). If there are lesions in the area of the ribcage (bones, muscles, nerves), coughing can cause chest pain. If the chest pain is on the right side, this is more likely to speak against involvement of the organs in the thorax, since most of them are located in the middle (trachea, esophagus) or left (heart).

However, small adhesions in the lungs or diseases of the airways and lung tissue can be the cause of chest pain on the right when coughing. Chest pain on the right after exercise must be divided into pain occurring once after exercise and pain that occurs regularly after physical exertion. Chest pain that occurs immediately after sport can be caused by overexertion of the intercostal muscles or by trauma such as a collision.

However, young, healthy men in particular can develop a so-called spontaneous pneumothorax, in which the lung collapses for no apparent reason. This phenomenon occurs more often after sports and can be manifested by respiratory chest pain on the right side. It should be clarified by a doctor, but is usually no cause for concern.

You should become clairaudient if chest pain regularly occurs during or after sport, as this can be a circulatory disorder of the heart. This is angina pectoris, in which the coronary arteries no longer supply the heart muscle with sufficient blood under stress. If left untreated, this can lead to a heart attack.

If, in addition to chest pain, breathing difficulties, dizziness or nausea occur to the right after exercise, the symptoms should be clarified immediately to rule out problems with the heart. Back pain can manifest itself in many different ways. The most common cause of back pain is a muscular imbalance.

Due to the typically sedentary activity of the majority of the population, the back muscles weaken in combination with a long constant posture of the back. This leads to tension in the back. Typically, this becomes noticeable by back pain in the area of the rib cage.

Due to the interaction of the body’s muscles, this pain can radiate into the ribcage and thus also into the chest itself and become noticeable there. During pregnancy the body of a woman goes through many different changes. Many are due to hormonal changes.

These are important, for example, to prepare the uterus for the forthcoming pregnancy and the breasts for subsequent breastfeeding. For example, the hormones progesterone and oestrogen stimulate the growth of the woman’s breasts. More precisely, the mammary glands increase in volume in order to produce enough milk for breastfeeding.

In addition, more fat cells are produced, which means that the breast gains in overall volume. These changes can lead to breast pain in many pregnant women. Overall, breasts are more sensitive and tense during pregnancy.

Furthermore, the cause of breast pain, especially if it only affects one breast, can be an inflammation of a gland. The small glandular ducts can easily become narrow and bacteria can trigger an inflammatory reaction. The inflammation can subside on its own after a few days or should otherwise be examined by a gynaecologist. In addition to a few household remedies such as curd cheese compresses, cooling ointments, relaxing baths and loose, comfortable clothing can help to alleviate breast pain during pregnancy.
