When must yellow diarrhea be treated?

Yellow diarrhea may require treatment for various reasons. Frequently, the diarrhoea causes increased fluid loss. This can lead to dehydration.

Therefore a treatment with sufficient liquid is necessary. This can be compensated for by an increased amount of drinking if the loss of fluid is low. In case of severe dehydration, an infusion may be necessary.

Depending on the cause of the yellow diarrhea, a causal treatment may also be necessary. This is the case, for example, with chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases. Yellow diarrhea, which is accompanied by blood deposits, should also be diagnosed and possibly treated. In such cases, a pure treatment of the blood loss is often not sufficient; instead, the injured piece of intestine must also be treated. If necessary, accompanying symptoms such as fever, headache and aching limbs as well as fatigue and poor performance should also be treated.

Yellow diarrhea in the baby

In babies, slight color changes and differences in the consistency of the bowel movements are not uncommon. Feeding breast milk makes the bowel movements more fluid than in older children. This can give the impression that it is diarrhea instead of normal defecation.

The yellowish color is also not uncommon with breast milk nutrition. Instead, a dark or greenish discoloration of the defecation is more unusual in babies. However, if other symptoms such as abdominal pain and fever occur at the same time as yellowish diarrhea, the symptoms may also indicate a gastrointestinal infection in the baby.

Yellow diarrhea in infants

In children, the color and consistency of the bowel movements is generally comparable to that of adults. In contrast to babies and toddlers, children’s diet is also consistent with that of adults, which is why their bowel movements are comparable to those of healthy adults. Therefore yellow diarrhea in children is usually a sign of infection or other irritation of the gastrointestinal tract. The causes are comparable to the disease triggers in adults. Especially in children, one should also clarify whether food intolerance is a possible cause of yellow diarrhea.
