Which accompanying symptoms are typical?

Depression is characterized by the three symptoms “depressed mood”, loss of interest and lack of drive. However, it is not necessary for all three symptoms to be present at the same time for a depression to be diagnosed. It is sufficient if there are two main symptoms with further secondary symptoms.

Side symptoms include sleep disorders of any kind. A typical symptom of depression is an increased need for sleep, which usually exceeds ten hours of sleep in an adult. Despite the increased resting phases, a typical “morning low” occurs, which often leads to a delayed day-night rhythm.

In addition, the quality of sleep is not good and is characterised by difficulties falling asleep or sleeping through the night. Furthermore, attention disorders often occur in the context of depression. Those affected notice this, particularly in everyday working life, in the form of a reduced ability to concentrate, which is accompanied by an increase in making mistakes.

And last but not least, another symptom is the loss of self-confidence, which can manifest itself in many ways. Those affected often lose their self-esteem and unfoundedly accuse themselves of having done something wrong. In extreme cases, these recurring thoughts can lead to suicide. This is the most dreaded complication of depression, which must be treated medically.

What can you do about depression with the pill?

The therapy of a depression depends on its severity. The principle is that only moderate depression should be treated with medication. In mild forms, a careful wait of about two weeks by the family doctor or psychotherapy may be indicated.

If the depression occurs as a result of taking the contraceptive pill, there are various approaches. The treatment depends on whether contraception using the contraceptive pill is still desired. If this is the case, the preparation should not be changed.

The pill should therefore continue to be taken as usual and if necessary the depression should be treated in parallel. Changing a preparation does not usually promise any improvement, as in most cases only the shell substances of the pill types differ. In this case, however, the cause of the depression is the hormone composition in the pill, which is almost the same for the different preparations.

A change of preparation would therefore only cause the general side effects such as the increased risk of thrombosis when the other contraceptive pill is taken again. Furthermore, studies have shown that the risk of depression is only increased in the first six months. After the initial period of taking the pill, the risk returns to that of the normal population.

If a woman suffers from depression because of the contraceptive method, she can of course stop taking the pill immediately. However, this does not usually change the length of the depression. However, if there is a genetic predisposition to depression, this measure can reduce the risk of depression returning.
