The respiratory syncytical virus, or RS virus for short, is one of the most important causes of respiratory diseases, especially in children.

The virus attacks the cells of the upper respiratory tract, where it can lead to a significant narrowing of the bronchial tubes through the production of mucus and grafting from dead viruses and cells. If the viruses also reach the lower respiratory tract, slight fluid congestion in the lungs and severe coughing can occur. Treatment is directed against the symptoms that arise, so that expectorants, cough syrups or agents to dilate the bronchi can be prescribed by a doctor. As a housewife’s trick, however, inhaling over steaming salt water is also highly recommended in order to loosen the mucus better and open up the airways.
