Which doctor treats ptosis?

As already explained in the section “Treatment of Ptosis“, ptosis is treated either with medication or surgery. The medication is prescribed by the ophthalmologist. However, if the ophthalmologist determines that the medication is not improving or that surgery is inevitable, then an eye surgeon must perform the operation.

The ophthalmologist in charge is again responsible for the follow-up treatment and follow-up checks. Since ptosis in the majority of cases is based on damage to either the eye lifter muscle or the nerve supplying it, and since this damage is usually irreversible, it can be assumed that a ptosis once it has occurred will not improve on its own. If the vision of the affected patient is not further impaired by the drooping eyelid, it is also a purely cosmetic problem and does not require further medical treatment.

However, it is essential to consult a specialist to determine the cause of a new and prolonged ptosis, as this can often be interpreted as a symptom of an underlying, more serious disease. If this is the case, it is possible that the ptosis may also disappear with treatment of the underlying disease. More about the underlying disease can be found under Mysthenia gravis.
