Which home remedies can help?

There are some home remedies that have proven to be effective in fighting a cold, most notably the classic tea for colds. It doesn’t matter which type of tea you ultimately use. Herbal teas are particularly recommended.

Some pharmacists and doctors advise against peppermint tea while breast-feeding, as this tea inhibits milk production. Other varieties, such as rosehip, are harmless, however, they help to “sweat out” the cold and relieve symptoms such as sore throat and cough. They also supply the body with sufficient liquid.

This is especially important during the breastfeeding period. Calf compresses are recommended at higher temperatures to lower the temperature. However, if the temperature is above 38.5°C and symptoms persist, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Steam baths are good for loosening mucus and clearing the airways. These can be performed several times a day. A light addition to the steam bath water is particularly beneficial.

Fresh thyme is suitable, for example. Another important and very simple household remedy that promotes healing is fresh air. The room should be ventilated several times a day.

Homeopathic remedies, especially globules, may be used during the nursing period. However, solutions and tinctures should be avoided, as they usually contain alcohol as a solvent. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, various homeopathic remedies are available to treat the common cold.

So-called complex homeopathics from the pharmacy, which contain various remedies, are also suitable for treating a cold during pregnancy. Frequently used homeopathic remedies for colds include Alium Cepa, Arsenicum album or Gelsemium. At best, one should seek individual advice from an experienced pharmacist or homeopath regarding the remedies and potencies used.

Duration

In the case of a common cold while breastfeeding, the symptoms usually disappear within a week. However, a longer or shorter duration is also possible individually. A longer course and a worsening of the symptoms, the addition of new complaints such as coughing and sore throat, however, indicate an additional infection of the upper respiratory tract or flu. In this case you should consult a doctor again.
