Which home remedies have a quick effect?

Home remedies that are said to have a relatively quick effect on constipation include olive oil (taken as a tea or tablespoonful of pure) and soaked dried plums or prune juice. However, the most important thing in treating constipation is a sufficient fluid intake of 2-3 liters per day (unless there are heart or kidney diseases that prohibit this) and sufficient daily exercise and a balanced diet rich in fiber.

Movement against constipation

Movement is a very important part of a well functioning digestion. This does not refer to daily competitive sports. Even regular walks or climbing stairs will stimulate the intestinal activity.

Acute constipation: Acute constipation is treated depending on the trigger. If the constipation is the result of short-term changes (lifestyle, diet, infection), it is sufficient to resume the old habits or wait for the end of an infection. Constipation-causing medication is discontinued.

If this is not enough to end the constipation, measures such as enemas (enema, enema) are used. In these procedures, fluid is injected into the intestine via the anus, causing the stool to soften and the bowel to empty quickly. If there are more serious diseases, which manifest themselves as acute constipation, these must be treated.

Depending on its form, intestinal obstruction (ileus) is treated either with medication or surgery. Fast treatment is important, since intestinal obstruction as the cause of constipation is a life-threatening clinical picture. Strokes as the cause of acute constipation can be treated with a so-called lysis therapy.

This is the dissolution of blood clots that have blocked vessels and thus caused the blood flow to stop and thus the stroke. However, lysis therapy is only initiated if a certain time window between the start of the stroke and the start of therapy has not yet been exceeded (3 or 4.5 hours). Otherwise, securing vital functions and subsequent rehabilitation (including physiotherapy) are crucial. Herniated discs, which can also be accompanied by acute constipation, are treated either conservatively with painkillers and physiotherapy to build up muscles or surgically, depending on the degree of severity.
