Which over-the-counter drugs help with low blood pressure?

Etilefrin is an important over-the-counter drug for stabilizing the circulation by increasing blood pressure. It is used in the typical circulatory follow-up symptoms of hypotension. These include the occurrence of dizziness, inexplicable fatigue, weakness, and stargazing or blackening of the eyes.

As a combination preparation with dihydroergotamine, Etilefrin is a prescription drug. In the form of a mono-preparation, however, no prescription is required. For example, it can be taken in drop form under the trade name Effortil®.

The combination of camphor and hawthorn (Korodin® drops) is also available without a prescription. They are available in the form of a cardiovascular drop for oral administration. This preparation strengthens not only the cardiovascular but also the respiratory function.

Camphor is a colorless solid which occurs in different plants. It is industrially produced synthetically and has potentially psychoactive and toxic effects when overdosed.

Which homeopathic medicines can help?

In the treatment of hypotension, homeopathic preparations can certainly be used. Other substances used are Veratum album, Acisum phosphoricum and Coffea. Hypotension can also be treated by acupuncture, specific nutritional advice or medical hypnosis. Here, however, the existence of a medical basis must be viewed critically.

Which herbal remedies help against low blood pressure?

Various herbal medicines can be used in phytotherapy for low blood pressure (hypotension). Hawthorn extracts (Crataegus laevigata) play an important role here. They can be used either as a mono-preparation in the form of capsules, tablets, drops, juice or tea or otherwise in combination with another active ingredient.

Hawthorn is said to be able to improve contractility and increase the heart‘s beat volume. The coronary arteries should dilate under the hawthorn’s administration, thus improving the perfusion (blood supply) of the heart. Hawthorn is therefore particularly suitable for therapeutic administration in cases of cardiac insufficiency (weakness of the heart muscle).

In combination preparations it can be combined with magnesium and vitamin E or with camphor. The combined preparation of camphor and hawthorn is known as Korodin® Cardiovascular Drops. It contains an alcoholic extract (menthol) and does not require a prescription.

Korodin® has an overall strengthening effect on heart function and antispasmodic effects on the lungs. Increased blood flow through the coronary arteries increases the oxygen supply to the heart, which is why the strength of contraction can be increased. Menthol and camphor dilate the bronchial tubes and thus alleviate respiratory distress symptoms.

Korodin® is therefore used in certain situations such as mild cardiovascular complaints with fatigue and poor performance due to low blood pressure (hypotension). Korodin® can be taken with a piece of sugar or bread, but not with water. Korodin® can be taken during pregnancy without any problems.

However, it is contraindicated in infants and toddlers under two years of age or in cases of hypersensitivity reactions due to allergies. Patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases with hyperreactive bronchial system should not take Korodin. Other active ingredients against low blood pressure from the field of phytotherapy are Pulsatilla pratensis (meadow pasque flower), rosemary and ginseng.
