Which toothpaste should be used? | Brushing baby’s teeth

Which toothpaste should be used?

There are several toothpastes on the market that are suitable for babies. Finally, you can buy them in the usual drugstores. When choosing a toothpaste, one should distinguish thoroughly between a baby toothpaste and a junior toothpaste. From the beginning of the eruption of the first milk tooth until the formation of permanent teeth (approx.

from the age of six), a specific baby or child’s toothpaste should be used. These are characterized by a reduced fluoride content (no more than 550ppm fluoride) and a sweet taste. Junior toothpastes can be used from the breakthrough of permanent teeth.

They have the same fluoride content as adults, but have a milder taste. Toothpastes with fluorine or fluoride are generally recommended. The German Society for Tooth, Mouth and Jaw Medicine (DGZMK) recommends a fluoride toothpaste containing a maximum of 500 ppm fluoride for babies and toddlers.

The fluoride content is usually indicated on the back of the tube. A higher fluoride content should only be used when brushing the teeth after the age of approx. six years.

Toothpastes containing fluoride strengthen the tooth enamel and thus contribute to caries prophylaxis. Nowadays there are hardly any toothpastes that do not contain any fluorine or fluoride. Nevertheless, there are some products on the market that do not contain this caries preventive agent. Natural enzymes and proteins are supposed to ensure a healthy oral environment and reduce harmful bacteria. Nevertheless, the positive effect of toothpastes containing fluoride has been proven in many dental studies.

Brushing teeth with the fingerling

Besides special toothbrushes, the baby’s teeth can be cleaned with the help of a fingerling. This usually consists of two sides. One side is smooth and serves to massage the sensitive, childlike gums.

The back of the fingerling is soft and is used to clean the teeth. Some manufacturers use silver threads in their products to kill bacteria and ensure a healthy oral environment. Before the first use the finger cots should be rinsed thoroughly under warm running water.

After use they should be dried completely in a clean place. After approx. 4 – 6 weeks the finger stalls should be replaced regularly.
