Symptoms
Single or multiple small white spots often appear on the fingernails or toenails. They grow along with the nail and eventually disappear when the nail is cut.
Causes
There is an underlying disorder of keratinization, usually resulting from mechanical trauma. Mineral deficiency (e.g., calcium deficiency), on the other hand, is not a cause.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis can usually be made by oneself. In the case of larger spots, other discolorations, thickening or yellowing (nail fungus) or a completely white nail, however, a medical clarification is indicated.
Treatment
No treatment is necessary. The spots grow out again on their own and have no disease value. It is primarily a minor aesthetic problem.
