Who benefits from an overpressure mask?

Overpressure masks are used as part of a CPAP (continuous positive airways pressure) treatment. CPAP therapy is suitable for snorers who also suffer from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The positive pressure mask is still considered the gold standard for severe sleep apnea.

For pure snoring, therapy with a positive pressure mask would be inappropriate. In obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, the soft tissues collapse due to the negative pressure during inhalation. Anatomical changes, overweight with fat deposits in the neck area and a deep, flaccid soft palate favour the breathing stops during sleep apnoea as well as snoring.

The positive pressure mask creates an overpressure that prevents the collapse of the upper airways and the subsequent breathing pauses. It is therefore a very well suited therapy like patients suffering from severe sleep apnea. The following topic could also be of interest to you: Therapy of sleep apnea syndrome

How can chinstraps help?

Chinstraps or chin bandages consist of elastic bands that tie snorers around the head. These means of preventing snoring stabilize the chin and mouth during sleep. Chinstraps are intended to prevent the air breathed through the mouth, oral cavity with soft palate and tongue from flowing into the windpipe.

The anatomical structures responsible for snoring are bypassed. Accordingly, chin straps and bandages are particularly suitable for mouth breathers. Chinstraps can be combined with nose clips or nasal plasters. Chinstraps can usually be used for a long time and are easy to clean. They are already available at very low prices.

Can a nasal spray help against snoring?

Nasal sprays are among the most frequently sold drugs and can be found in almost every household. Decongestant nasal sprays contain vasoconstrictive and secretion-inhibiting ingredients and are therefore used especially for colds and a congested nose. A blocked nose severely hinders nasal breathing and can cause temporary snoring in those affected.

In this case, nasal spray can be used to clear the nose and prevent snoring. Nasal sprays should not be used for longer than a maximum of five to seven days at a time, as they are addictive and can cause a chronic nasal spray associated cold (rhinitis medicamentosa).
