Why are the costs so high?

As explained above, Humira is a biological agent, i.e. a drug that is produced biotechnologically using genetically modified organisms. In the case of Humira, these are so-called CHO cells (Chinese hamster ovaries). This means that the eggs of the Chinese hamster are used to produce the antibody Adalimumab. As you might imagine, this is a very complex procedure and therefore costs a lot of money.

Alternatives to Humira

Normally, before using Humira, other drugs, so-called basic therapeutics, such as cortisone, 5-ASA or methotrexate are tried. Depending on the disease, very different drugs can be used. As an alternative to Humira, some other biologicals can also be used. In particular there are other TNF-alpha-blockers, such as Infliximab, which is sold under the trade name Remicade or Etanacept, which is sold under the name Enbrel.

Is it possible to take it during pregnancy and lactation?

There are no data on the use of Humira in pregnancy yet. Pregnant women are therefore advised not to use Humira in order not to endanger the child. If Humira has been used accidentally, a doctor should be informed, as the infant may have a higher risk of infection and may need a vaccination. It is also unclear whether Humira passes into the breast milk. Since Humira remains in the body for a very long time, it should not be breastfed for at least five months after the last application.

Humira and desire to have children

The possibility of having a child is not influenced by Humira in principle. However, it could become problematic if high levels of Humira are still present in the blood at the beginning of pregnancy. Therefore, if you wish to have a child, you should consult your gynecologist, the doctor who prescribed Humira or a pharmacist.

Can Humira be used at the same time as the pill?

Humira and the contraceptive pill should normally not get in each other’s way, as they are used in a completely different way and work in completely different places in the body. Nevertheless, it certainly cannot hurt to point out to the prescribing physician the use of the respective medicine.
