The flowers of the wild pansy are white, yellow or purple. The name pansy was given to the flower by the vernacular. Another name of the wild pansy is the term field pansy. The Latin name is Viola tricolor. The word already gives information about the external appearance of the plant. Tricolor means three-colored. The flowers of the wild pansy are white, yellow or purple. The name pansy was given to the flower by the vernacular. It refers to the structure of the flowers. While the uppermost flowers are considered a symbol of chairs, which the stepmother claims, those located to the side belong to their own daughters. The stepdaughters, on the other hand, must sit on the lowest chairs. The wild pansy can be found all over Europe. The only exceptions are the most southern and northern places. Viola tricolor prefers acidic soils and can be found especially often in fields next to cereals. Cereals have certain substances that are secreted through the roots and have a positive effect on the growth of the wild pansy. In the course of its growth, the plant assumes a maximum height of about 30 centimeters. The flowering period is between May and October and produces petals that are either purple, yellow and violet or tricolor.

Effect and use

Different parts of the plant can be used for medicinal purposes. These include the flowers, roots as well as the herb. Often, a tea is made with the plant for internal and external ailments. This can be a cold extract or an infusion. In the cold extract, the ingredients are poured over with cold water. To prevent the essential oils from escaping, the cup should be covered and left in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, the leaves can be removed and the liquid slowly warmed. In this way, it is guaranteed that the ingredients of the wild pansy are preserved. In the infusion, on the other hand, the dried parts of the plant are infused directly with boiling water and left to infuse for about 10 minutes. Leaves, stems and flowers are combined as an herb. After harvesting, the components should be dried first. There are requirements for the quality of the medicinal plant, which come from the European Pharmacopoeia. Decisive for the medicinal effect of the wild pansy are its ingredients. These are mainly flavonoids, which account for about 0.2 to 0.4 percent. In addition, the plant has a high percentage of mucilages, phenolic carboxylic acids, for example, salicylic acid, tannins and hydroxycoumarins. The ingredients give the plant antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, expectorant, analgesic and antispasmodic properties. Accordingly, they are used, for example, for cough, asthma, rheumatism, inflammation, eczema, kidney weakness or gout.
