Winter Sports: Pleasure on Ice and Snow

Swinging down the slope, preferably with fresh snow and a bright blue sky, a magnificent mountain backdrop in the background, the whole family in tow. Skiing is still the most popular winter sport. Whether it’s the exercise, the nature experience or rather the sociable après-ski that’s in the foreground is up to everyone. In any case, beginners are well advised to visit the ski school. A cheaper option is to get someone from your circle of friends or relatives to pass on their skills. By the way, children are real naturals when it comes to skiing. The younger, the better.

Fitness factor in skiing

If you’re out on the slopes from morning until afternoon, completing one run after another, you’re challenging your entire leg muscles in addition to your upper body and shoulders. And the calorie consumption is also considerable, provided you don’t make up for it too lavishly on the return turn. Physical basis is a regularly performed ski gymnastics in advance.

Equipment important for skiing fun

Skis, bindings, boots and poles – good equipment can be rented locally if in doubt. This is not quite cheap, but has the advantage that you can try out new models. Especially for children, you should pay attention to high-quality equipment and ski boots must fit exactly. Also important for young and old: warm, functional clothing.

Safety on skis

To avoid injuries, reasonable preparation is essential, because the load on the joints, especially the knees, is enormous. Sports scientists advise starting strength and endurance training at least eight to ten weeks before the season begins. In addition, amateur skiers should not overdo it in the first few days on the slopes, but instead warm up daily with a few squats and easy runs – this also applies after longer breaks. Also, a must for children and recommended for parents: helmet on for the descent!
